Roxburgh Debris Flows: Proposed Measures

Consultation has concluded. Thank you for your participation.

We held an information session in Roxburgh on Tuesday 8 May to help the community learn more about what happened and some of the research that has been conducted around the Roxburgh debris flow which occurred on 26 November 2017. If you couldn't make it on the night we have all the information here.

Following the completion of the GNS report, we are considering the following measures:

Physical work

  • Encourage revegetation of the scoured channels
  • Maintain channel profiles on the upper part of alluvial fans to a defined cross-section
  • Enhance bank protection on the Reservoir Creek channel above the concrete section.

Community awareness

  • Periodic promotions and education about the risks of debris flows during heavy rainfall
  • Investigate the feasibility of debris flow early warning systems
  • Installation of a rain gauge in the upper catchments with data available via the website.

We'd love to hear what you think about these measures. Tell us in the feedback tab below.

Otago Regional Council, Central Otago District Council, and NZ Transport Agency continue to work together on an overall strategy for this issue.
