Our waterways support all life in Otago including rare galaxiid fish, the mahika kai we collect, the swimming holes we love, how we earn our living, and the water we drink. The health of some Otago waterways is excellent but others need improving.

Over the next two years we need your help to develop a new Land and Water Plan so all our waterways can be healthy and safe, from the mountains to the sea (ki uta ki tai).

The Government’s goal is to improve water quality within one generation, and puts this responsibility with regional councils and communities. The time to start this journey together is now.

From November 2021 until early 2023, we’ll be consulting with communities to seek your knowledge and views on local waterways. Your goals and preferences for local lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands and aquifers, combined with the science we’ve collected, and input from iwi, will guide how ORC proposes to manage water and land in your area.

We’d love your input so please have your say in the survey about waterways in the Catlins area below.

In this consultation, we would like to check that:

  • If we have understood the things you value about waterways that your community told us last year during consultation on our new Regional Policy Statement.
  • If you have any other waterway values you would like to add.

We’re also asking a bit more detail about the things that matter to you, including different aspects of each waterway value and where you’d like to do or see each value.

You can have your say in the online survey until end of day Monday 20 December 2021.

Next steps

This consultation will be followed by another one in February 2022 that puts all the info gathered together now into a proposed set of objectives and rules for the Catlins FMU section of the new proposed Land and Water Regional Plan. You will be able to make a submission on the new propose new plan in December 2023.
