Regional Public Transport Plan – Lake Wakatipu Water Ferry Amendment

Consultation has concluded

Otago Regional Council recognises that there is demand for a water ferry in the Frankton Arm of Lake Wakatipu.

At a recent ORC meeting the regional council signalled that they want to support a publicly-funded water ferry service. A long-term public transport ferry would be contracted by ORC with infrastructure provided by QLDC.

Our current Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP), our guiding statutory document, does not specify a Frankton Arm ferry service. We propose a variation to the plan to enable us to contract a trial ferry service.

The service depends on factors including the 2020 to 2021 annual plan.

  • We propose a variation to the plan to enable us to contract a trial ferry service. The amendment will specify that: A Frankton Arm to Queenstown Bay water ferry service is integral to the network.

To enable this change, the ORC is required to consult with the public.

Consultation for this plan change is from 30 January until 12 February.
